What Humidity Does a Humidor Need?

The ideal humidity inside a humidor is between 68 and 72 percent, at a temperature of 18 to 20 degrees. It's precisely in this range that the wrapper stays supple and the cigar burns evenly. If the climate drifts off, the first thing to suffer is the aroma.

To keep an eye on all this, a hygrometer helps, and on modern models it's usually already built in. As a rule of thumb:

  • Below 65%: the cigar dries out and the smoke quickly tastes harsh.
  • Between 68% and 72% everything is in the green
  • Above 75% the cigar barely draws and mould becomes a risk

Humidification Systems: a Constant Climate with No Effort

Humidification systems provide the necessary top-up so that the humidity stays stable even when you open the humidor frequently. In practice, two approaches have proven themselves above all:

  • Humidity pads such as Boveda keep the moisture constant via two-way regulation and are ideal for travel humidors.
  • Active systems with UV-C sterilisation such as THE HUMIDOR regulate the climate automatically and can be monitored via app. They are suited to large cabinet humidors and, thanks to the UV treatment, may even be filled with ordinary tap water.

Only with classic humidifiers without UV-C does this apply: use distilled water or a special humidifier solution, because tap water leaves limescale behind. You'll find matching humidification pads for daily care and filter mats to protect against limescale build-up in our accessories.

Storage Without Mould or Bacteria

When storing cigars, too much humidity is the most common mistake. As soon as the readings climb above 75 percent, you risk mould on the wrapper and, once it gets warm, tobacco beetles. It also encourages the growth of germs and bacteria. That can render a cigar completely unusable.

Here's how you can prevent this:

  1. Check the humidity on the hygrometer regularly
  2. Don't fill it to the brim, so the air can circulate
  3. Clean the humidifier and filter and replace them in good time
  4. Avoid direct sun and proximity to heating

Tip: not every deposit is mould. True plume sits flat on the wrapper as a fine, crystalline film, whereas mould stands out fuzzy and smells musty. When in doubt, treat the deposit as mould and set the cigar aside.

Cigar Boxes for Every Need

The best way to choose the right product is by how you enjoy your cigars: if you only treat yourself to a cigar now and then, go for a more compact model. If, on the other hand, you want to build a growing collection and let different formats mature over the years, you'll need more space and more precise technology accordingly.

  • For on the go: a rugged travel humidor that safely transports a few cigars and keeps them at constant humidity with a Boveda pad.
  • For your cigar collection at home: a large cabinet humidor with active humidification and digital climate monitoring that easily holds several hundred cigars.

Our humidors combine precise Swiss craftsmanship with the conditions for a consistently optimal climate. Discover a high-quality, durable home for your cigars in our shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I properly season a new humidor?

A new humidor must be humidified before first use; otherwise, the dry wood will draw moisture from the cigars. Wipe the interior with distilled water or place a small bowl inside. Then, let the humidor acclimate for one to two days with the lid closed until the hygrometer consistently shows around 70 percent. Only after this should you place the first cigars inside.

How long do the cigars stay fresh?

At a constant humidity of 68 to 72 percent, cigars will easily last several years. Many even mature during this time and develop rounder, deeper flavors. Crucial is a stable climate without strong fluctuations, because constant ups and downs do more harm than a consistently slightly deviating value. Therefore, it is best to check the hygrometer once a week.

How do I know if my humidor is leaking?

If the humidity constantly drops despite a full humidifier, the lid usually no longer closes properly. The dollar test quickly helps: Clamp a banknote between the lid and the body and pull it out again. If it can be pulled out without any resistance, moisture is escaping at this point. Repeat the test on several sides to detect leaky corners.

Can I store cigars without a humidor?

In the short term, yes, for example in an airtight container with a humidity pack that maintains the appropriate moisture level. This will tide you over for a few days without damage. However, for longer cigar storage and consistent flavor, a humidor is indispensable. Only a humidor can consistently maintain the climate and reliably protect your cigars.
